SMILE Pro 2.0

SMILE Pro 2.0 is the latest generation of lenticule extraction. A minimally invasive laser vision correction procedure offered by Dr Ikmal.

How SMILE Pro works

Vision correction without a flap.

SMILE Pro uses the ZEISS VISUMAX 800 femtosecond laser to shape a thin disc of tissue, called a lenticule, inside the intact cornea. The lenticule is then removed through a small incision, and the cornea’s new curve corrects short-sightedness and astigmatism.

  1. 01Lenticule creationThe laser shapes a thin lenticule and a small incision inside the intact cornea.
  2. 02Lenticule removalThe lenticule is removed through the incision, with minimal disruption to the cornea.
  3. 03Cornea reshapedWith the lenticule gone, the cornea’s curve changes to correct your vision.

Benefits of SMILE Pro

  • No corneal flap

Nothing is cut and lifted from the corneal surface, so there is no flap to heal or to be dislodged later, a practical point for contact sports and active jobs.

  • Keyhole incision

The lenticule leaves through a 2–4 mm opening, so most of the cornea’s surface stays intact.

  • Under 10 seconds of laser

The laser itself runs for less than 10 seconds per eye; most of your time in theatre is preparation.

  • Gentler on the eye’s surface

Fewer surface nerves are cut than with LASIK, so dry-eye symptoms are often milder in the early months.

  • Quick return to routine

Many people are back to desk work within a few days. Dr Ikmal will advise on timing for your eyes and job.

  • For short-sightedness and astigmatism

Designed for myopia with or without astigmatism. It does not treat long-sightedness; other options are discussed if that applies to you.

Plain-language guide

Words you may hear at your assessment

Short definitions of the terms Dr Ikmal may use when explaining SMILE Pro 2.0.

Cornea
The clear, dome-shaped window at the front of the eye. It does most of the eye’s focusing.
Lenticule
A thin, lens-shaped disc of corneal tissue that the laser shapes inside the cornea and that is then removed.
Femtosecond laser
A laser that works in ultra-short pulses (a femtosecond is a millionth of a billionth of a second), allowing very precise cuts inside tissue.
Incision
The small opening, 2–4 mm in SMILE Pro, through which the lenticule is removed.
Flap
In LASIK, a thin hinged layer of cornea that is lifted before the laser reshapes the tissue underneath. SMILE Pro does not create one.
Myopia (short-sightedness)
Distant objects look blurred because the eye focuses light in front of the retina instead of on it.
Astigmatism
An unevenly curved cornea or lens that makes vision blurred or distorted at all distances.
Refractive surgery
Any procedure that changes how the eye focuses light, to reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses.

If you are heavily dependent on glasses or contact lenses for daily tasks, you may be wondering if laser vision correction is a safe, minimally invasive option for you.

What is it?

SMILE Pro 2.0 is a flapless laser vision correction procedure. I use the ZEISS VISUMAX 800 femtosecond laser to correct myopia and astigmatism.

How does it work?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic drops and is generally painless. The laser delivery takes less than 10 seconds per eye.

Is this for me?

During your assessment, I will use topography to map the exact shape and thickness of your cornea. I will check that your cornea is healthy and strong enough for the procedure.

This procedure may be considered for patients with myopia and astigmatism who desire a flapless approach, including those involved in contact sports.

SMILE Pro may not be suitable if you have hyperopia (long-sightedness), severe dry eye, or an irregular cornea.

Recovery

I will prescribe eye drops to support healing.

Considerations

Risks include temporary dry eye, under-correction or over-correction, and visual halos at night. These generally improve as the eye heals.

Frequently asked questions

What factors influence the cost of SMILE Pro?

The cost reflects the use of the advanced ZEISS VISUMAX 800 laser platform and the single-use surgical packs required for each patient.
